If your plan is to ski or snowboard all day
Technical ski clothing. It is designed for movement: it blocks water on the outside, lets sweat out from the inside and stands up to falls, wet chairlifts and snow in all its forms (Erik's). It is the tool for someone who spends the day active on the slopes.
If the day comes in wet or rainy
Truly waterproof clothing, with a membrane and sealed seams. It is the layer that keeps you dry when the weather gets serious, above all in spring, when the snow falls wetter and heavier (37.5). For a relaxed day out in heavy rain, it is your safe bet.
If you are going to play, walk around and take photos — in other words, like most people
Fashion clothing. And note: it is not plan B, it is the star look. It keeps you very warm, looks great in photos and handles a light drizzle or a clear day of dry snow perfectly well.
The trick is in one single detail: since your bottom and your knees are what touch the snow — sitting down applies the equivalent of 5,000 mm of water pressure, kneeling up to 14,000 mm (Alpinetrek) — the winning combination is a fashion jacket on top and waterproof snow pants below.
