If you are planning a snow trip in Santiago, the first question you probably ask yourself is: when does the season really start, and how long can you enjoy it?
The short answer is that the ski season in Chile normally runs between June and October, although for most travellers July and August are the safest months to find good snow conditions.
But there is an important detail: the mountains do not follow a calendar. The opening date of each resort depends on the snowfalls, the temperature and the amount of accumulated snow. Some years it is possible to start skiing in mid-June; other years, the season takes a little longer to get going. The same happens at the end of winter: a good season can extend into October, while in drier years some areas start to close during September.
That is why, if you are organising a holiday, a family day trip or you simply want to go up and see the snow for the first time, it is not enough to know that the Chilean winter happens between June and September — Chile is in the Southern Hemisphere, so its seasons are the opposite of those in North America and Europe, and what is summer up north is deep winter here. The month you choose can change the experience quite a lot.

The quick answer
When does the snow season near Santiago start?
Under normal conditions, the season starts during the second half of June.
The exact date changes every year because the resorts need to build up enough of a snow base to operate their runs and lifts safely.
As a reference, during the 2026 season Valle Nevado and La Parva opened on 19 June and Portillo on 20 June, according to the opening calendar published before the start of the season by The Clinic.
June should therefore be seen as an opening month. It can be an excellent time to see the snow, but there is still more uncertainty about how many runs will be available and how deep the base will be.
When does the snow season end?
Most seasons end between late September and early October.
At Parque Farellones, for example, the season usually runs from mid-June until the end of September. Resorts located at higher altitude can extend their operations if snow conditions allow it.
If your main goal is to have a high chance of finding good snow, July and August are much safer options than waiting until the end of September or October.
The snow season month by month: what can you expect?
The question “when is there snow in Santiago?” has a different answer depending on what you are looking for. Wanting to learn to ski, travelling with children, avoiding queues or simply touching snow for the first time are not the same thing.
June: the snow season begins
June marks the arrival of winter and the first openings of the mountain resorts.
Normally, the first weeks of June are still unpredictable. One or two significant storms can completely transform the mountains in a matter of days, which is why openings are usually confirmed quite close to the date.
The second half of the month is much more interesting. The resorts start operating and a relevant advantage appears: the peak of the winter school holidays has not started yet.
For those who can travel with flexibility, late June can offer smaller crowds and a good experience. The risk is simply that the season may have started with little snow and some runs may still be closed.
July: the best chance of finding snow
If your number one priority is to see snow, July is normally the safest bet.
The guide by Neve Chile describes July as the peak of the season: good snow availability, but also higher prices and a larger number of visitors.
It also coincides with the Chilean winter school holidays and with the holiday period of many Brazilian tourists. The result is fairly predictable: more demand for accommodation, transfers, ski lessons, equipment rental and restaurants.
If you are travelling in July, especially during the winter holidays, it is a good idea to organise the main services in advance. Some recommendations aimed at the Brazilian market suggest booking 4 to 8 weeks before the trip.
July is therefore probably the best month for anyone who says: “I don't want to risk coming to Chile and not finding snow”.
August: the best balance between snow and experience
August tends to be the most balanced month of the season.
By that point in the winter there is already a snow base built up during June and July, but some of the tourist pressure from the school holidays starts to ease.
This makes it possible to find very good snow conditions with slightly fewer crowds.
As an example, the Valle Nevado mountain report of 6 August 2026 reported 414 cm of snowfall accumulated during the season, 45 of 45 runs open and 12 of 13 lifts running.
Naturally, every year will be different. But the general pattern makes August particularly attractive for families and travellers who have flexibility when choosing dates.
If July is the month with the most certainty, August tends to be the month with the best balance.
September: there can still be very good snow
September does not automatically mean that the season is over.
During the first weeks there can still be a significant snow base, especially at the higher-altitude resorts. In addition, there are normally fewer visitors than in July.
The issue is that uncertainty increases. The days are longer, temperatures start to rise and snow quality can change quite a lot between morning and afternoon.
For flexible travellers, September can be an excellent opportunity. For someone organising an international trip exclusively to see the snow, on the other hand, July or August offer more certainty.
October: possible, but do not plan your trip around it
Some particularly good seasons make it possible to keep runs open during part of October.
However, October should be understood as an exceptional extension of the season, not as a guaranteed snow month.
If you are travelling from another country exclusively to see the snow-covered mountains, we do not recommend building your trip around this possibility.
Which is the best month to come to the snow near Santiago?
There is no single best month. There is a best month depending on the kind of trip you want to take.

For an international visitor coming to Chile for the first time, our general recommendation would be the second half of July or August.
July gives you more certainty. August usually gives you a calmer experience without sacrificing too much snow quality.
What temperatures will you find in the mountains?
One of the most common mistakes visitors make is to check the weather in Santiago before setting off and assume they will find something similar up in the mountains.
That is not the case.
During July, Santiago can have around 3 °C as a low and 12 °C as a high, while in the mountains temperatures can fall well below zero.
The historical July averages at Valle Nevado are close to 0 °C during the day and −8 °C at night. And during intense weather systems conditions can be considerably colder.
The Valle Nevado report of 6 August 2026, for example, forecast lows of between −8 °C and −15 °C for the following days.
The practical conclusion is simple:
Sunshine and 12 °C in Santiago does not mean you can go up dressed as if you were spending the day in the city.
In the mountains you can find much lower temperatures, snow, damp and wind. A good base layer, waterproof trousers and jacket, gloves, proper boots and protection for your eyes and head completely change the experience.
Does it snow in the city of Santiago?
Yes, but it is rare and you should not plan a trip expecting to see Santiago covered in snow.
Snow in central Chile normally appears at higher altitude. The freezing level and the snow line change with each weather system, but the snowfalls that matter for tourism are concentrated in the foothills and the mountains.
There are exceptional episodes. One of the most memorable snowfalls happened on 15 July 2017, when snow was recorded in different parts of Santiago and much larger accumulations in the foothills.
These events stand out precisely because they do not happen every winter.
So if you are coming to Chile thinking “I want to see the snow”, the right strategy is to set aside a day to go up to the mountains, not to wait for snow to fall outside your hotel in Santiago.
When does it snow most in the mountains near Santiago?
Winter concentrates most of the rainfall and snowfall in central Chile.
That explains why June, July and August are the key months for snow accumulation at the ski resorts.
But snowfalls do not happen evenly. There can be several sunny days in a row and then a front comes in and leaves tens of centimetres of snow in a short time.
On 6 August 2026, for example, Valle Nevado reported 14 cm of new snow in 24 hours and 59 cm over the previous seven days in its mountain report.
This has an important consequence for any visitor: yesterday's snow report can matter more than the historical average for the month.
Before heading up, always check:
- road conditions;
- snow chains and vehicle restrictions;
- which runs and lifts are open;
- recent snowfall;
- temperature and wind;
- the forecast for the afternoon.
A big snowfall can leave spectacular conditions the following day, but while the front is passing it can also cause temporary closures or access problems.
Will it be very busy? When to avoid the biggest crowds
The snow season attracts a huge number of Chilean and international visitors.
For June to September 2026, around 1.3 million international visitors were forecast for the season, while Valle Nevado expected approximately 320,000 visitors and La Parva around 150,000, according to figures compiled by The Clinic.
More than the total number of tourists, what matters for your experience is when everyone is on the mountain at the same time.
The busiest periods are usually:
- the winter school holidays;
- weekends in July;
- the days right after a big snowfall;
- public holidays and long weekends.
If you are free to choose, try to go up from Monday to Friday, leave Santiago early and avoid the busiest weeks of the school holidays.
A difference of 24 hours can mean less traffic, shorter queues and quite a lot more time enjoying the mountain.
So, when should you travel to the snow?
If you are organising your trip from outside Chile and the snow is one of your main reasons for coming, the safest window is July and August.
Our practical recommendation would be:
- Choose July if your absolute priority is to maximise the chance of finding snow and you don't mind sharing the mountain with more tourists.
- Choose August if you want very good conditions, an accumulated snow base and normally slightly fewer crowds.
- Consider September if you have flexibility and are willing to check conditions before travelling in exchange for a quieter mountain.
- June can be fantastic after good snowfalls, but it is less predictable.
- October should be seen as a bonus when the winter has been especially good, not as a safe date to plan a snow trip around.
Before heading up: get your clothing and gear ready too
Mountain weather can change quickly. Even for those who are not going to ski, dressing properly is an essential part of the experience.
You don't necessarily need to buy clothing you will probably only wear during your trip. A practical alternative is to rent the clothing and equipment you need in Santiago before heading up, especially boots, jacket, snow trousers or a snow suit, gloves and goggles.
